At a glance

  • 10-day independent itinerary for southern Germany based on flying into Frankfurt and out of Düsseldorf
  • Live a life of leisure on this luxury trip staying at countryside castles (or schlösser) and boutique hotels in centuries-old cities
  • Highlights include staying at a schlosshotel outside Frankfurt, exploring historic Heidelberg, wine tasting in Deidesheim and teeing-off on world-class golf courses

A short drive from Frankfurt Rhein-Main international airport brings you to Schlosshotel Kronberg – a magnificent country estate that immerses you in Germany’s regal past. Built in 1893 for Empress Victoria, this castle hotel still contains much of her original collection of antiques and artworks. Those with an eye for Old Masters will spy paintings by Rubens and Titian on the walls, along with portraits by Gainsborough.

As you explore the hotel, you’ll be walking in the footsteps of the leaders who’ve shaped modern Europe – from Kaiser Wilhelm and Tsar Nicholas II to General Eisenhower. You can even play golf on a course developed in honour of the World War II commander and future US President, who stayed at the hotel following the Allied victory over Germany. And if you’re not a history buff, there’s still plenty to enjoy, such as the wonderfully ornate restaurant and stylish American bar, ideal for a whiskey nightcap. Suggested stay 3 nights.

From a castle fit for royalty to a medieval centre of learning – after leaving Kronberg, your path turns south to Heidelberg. This almost impossibly photogenic town is home to Germany’s oldest university, which welcomed its first students in the 14th century. Its fame rose in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it attracted Romantic poets and young aristocrats taking their traditional ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe.

Seek some poetic inspiration of your own with a walk through the Altstadt. Track down the views captured on canvas by British artist J.W Turner, who painted a series looking towards the Old Bridge and up to the castle. Or view more of the surrounding countryside, with its green woodland and rugged outcrops, on a boat cruise along the Neckar river.

Immerse yourself in Heidelberg’s history with a stay at Hotel Die Hirschgasse, a 15th century inn featured in Mark Twain’s A Tramp Abroad. In past centuries, students would come out to this secluded riverside spot to settle their differences over a duel. Today it’s much more peaceful, with inviting interiors, castle views and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Suggested stay 3 nights.

An excursion along the wine trail: Just a short drive from Heidelberg you’ll find yourself in the heart of Germany’s wine region: Deidesheim. Take a tasting tour of celebrated vineyards such as Basserman-Jordan, stopping off for a Michelin-starred meal at Ketschauer Hof. Head back to Heidelberg in the evening, or make this boutique hotel your base for an overnight stay. Another glass, anyone?

For your final stop, venture north to ‘City on the River’, Mülheim an der Ruhr. Although not far from fast-paced business hub, Düsseldorf, Mülheim is somewhere to take it slow.

Settle in at Villa am Ruhrufer Golf & Spa, a 19th century villa on the riverbanks turned contemporary boutique hotel. Golf is the main draw here – the hotel has partnerships with a number of nearby courses, including the Kosaido International Golf Club Düsseldorf and the Raffleburg. Hop on the complimentary shuttle and play both courses, then return to the hotel for a soothing spa treatment. Suggested stay 3 nights.
